Acne and skin trouble do not clear easily. The difficulty runs past appearance into real psychological strain, and treatment often fails to end it.
Acne in Korean medicine is read as fire in the skin. And where that fire comes from differs from person to person — which is the reason the same treatment produces such different results.
In Summary
- Acne is an inflammatory condition, and Korean Traditional Medicine reads it as fire (火) in the skin. That it clusters in the teens and twenties, when metabolic activity is at its most vigorous, points the same way.
- Fire in the skin can come from several organs, but the fire behind facial acne is closely tied to heat in the stomach and large intestine, and sometimes to heat in the lung.
- That heat frequently arises while the body detoxifies food that does not suit the constitution. The surplus energy is discharged in the form of acne.
- Two things worsen acne regardless of constitution: refined sugar and overeating. The reason is the same.
- For acne that has already formed, treating it externally matters more. Constitutional regulation reduces the conditions that produce the next one.
- Determining your constitution from an article or a questionnaire is unsafe. Diagnosis belongs in a clinic.
How Korean Medicine Reads Acne
Acne is an inflammatory condition. Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM), the traditional healing system of Korea also known as Hanbang (한방), reads it as fire (火) in the skin.
One observation supports the reading. Acne peaks in the teens and twenties — precisely when metabolic activity is most vigorous. That skin trouble concentrates in the years when the body is generating the most energy suggests this is a problem of surplus rather than deficiency.
Which Organ’s Fire
Fire in the skin can arise from more than one organ. The fire behind facial acne is closely tied to heat in the stomach and large intestine. Sometimes it comes from heat in the lung.
This matters because two eruptions that look identical can have different sources — and a different source means different work.
Why It Differs by Constitution
Here is where this series begins.
What generates that fire in the skin differs by constitution. In particular, the stomach and large intestine heat most directly tied to facial acne frequently arises while the body is detoxifying food that does not suit its constitution.
In other words, acne is the result of a processing burden. Energy generated in excess while handling something the body finds difficult is discharged in the form of acne.
Which is why the same food causes nothing at all in one person and appears on another’s face within days. The food is not bad. It does not suit that particular person.
What Is Bad for Everyone
Two things worsen acne regardless of constitution: excessive refined sugar, and overeating.
The reason is the same one. Both place a heavy processing load on the body. Before the question of whether something suits you comes the question of quantity.
External Treatment and Constitutional Care Are Different Jobs
To prevent a misreading: for acne that has already formed, treating it externally matters more.
Constitutional care does not replace that. It reduces the conditions under which the next eruption forms. Regulating things so that heat and inflammation are not generated in the first place is a more fundamental approach than treating the skin alone — but the two are not in competition.
Deep, inflamed acne with nodules or cysts can scar, and is better seen by a dermatologist first. And if acne is placing a heavy psychological burden on you, that alone is a reason to seek care.
A Warning About Self-Diagnosis
One point to be firm about. Determining a constitution from an article or a questionnaire is unsafe. Please do not read this series and conclude what your constitution is. That determination belongs with a KTM physician.
What is reasonable is trying a constitutional diet for a short period. And simply knowing that acne arises from different causes in different people already helps in understanding and managing skin.
In Summary
Treat acne as a problem of the skin alone and you end up repeating the same treatment. Ask where the fire showing on the skin came from, and a different route opens.
From the next article, I will take the constitutions one at a time — what causes acne in each, how it presents, and how to manage it.
