New to ECM? Start with What Is Eight Constitution Medicine? for the basics of the eight body types.
Why does eating for your constitution help with dieting at all? The point is not calorie counting. Food that does not suit your type burdens digestion and metabolism, holds water, and manufactures false hunger — so weight creeps on even when you eat little. Food that suits you, by contrast, is processed cleanly, and the body drifts back toward its own healthy weight. In Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM), the traditional healing system of Korea also known as Hanbang (한방), and within Eight Constitution Medicine (ECM), that is half the battle of dieting already won.
Among the eight, Colonotonia (금음체질) is the sibling of Pulmotonia. Both are Gold-type constitutions with large lungs and a relatively weak colon and liver, so the broad shape of the diet is nearly the same: leafy greens and seafood at the center, with meat, flour, and oily food sitting on the heavy side.
It is true that Colonotonia carries a streak of the Soeumin (water-type) nature. But it would be a mistake to read that as “so a little meat is fine.” If anything, Colonotonia can react to unsuitable food more violently than Pulmotonia does. The conclusion is the same for both: when you are unwell, keep meat and flour at a distance.
In Summary
- Colonotonia does best on leafy and stem vegetables and seafood. Calories come easily from grains such as rice, brown rice and buckwheat, and from vegetables themselves — remember that an ox grows strong on grass alone.
- The water-type streak does not make meat advisable. Colonotonia’s rejection of unsuitable food can be even stronger than Pulmotonia’s.
- The heaviest foods are flour and meat — especially eaten without vegetables, and worst of all with alcohol alongside.
- The colon is long and sensitive, so oily, stimulating food troubles it first. A tendency to constipation comes with the type.
- Sweat that arises naturally with exercise is nothing to worry about. Only when you are unwell is it worth avoiding exercise that forces out a heavy sweat.
- Above all: if you are healthy and not ill, small amounts of the harmful foods are perfectly fine — and can even do good. The list is for when the body is struggling.
What Suits and What Doesn’t
Beneficial: leafy green vegetables — cabbage, lettuce, napa cabbage, water parsley, perilla leaf, spinach, pumpkin leaf, bracken, sylimarin greens, kale, mugwort and crown daisy; plant-based fermented foods such as baechu kimchi and doenjang. Most fish suit this type, with saury, herring, anchovy, hairtail, mullet and gizzard shad particularly good; so do seaweeds (gim, miyeok, dashima, parae) and shellfish (hard clam, blood cockle, short-necked clam, abalone). Among fruit, green grape, kiwi, tangerine, orange, cherry, tomato and pineapple fit well, along with rice, buckwheat, mustard, cocoa, quince tea and cucumber.
Harmful: meat, dairy, flour products and oily food — the foods with the largest effect, so the habit to break is eating them without vegetables. Among fish, eel, loach, catfish and flatfish do not suit; nor do nuts, mushrooms, or coffee.
The Colon, and a Word on Temperament
Colonotonia has a colon that is long and easily irritated, so oily and stimulating food is what it reacts to first — which is also why constipation comes so readily. So rather than loading up on greasy food in the name of a diet, this type does better for both weight and colon by keeping the gut settled with leafy greens and seafood.
One more thing. People of this constitution often have a perfectionist, almost fastidious streak. It shows up in dieting too: they bind themselves to every item on the list and wear themselves out. Recognising that tendency in yourself — and deliberately holding the rules a little more loosely — tends to help more than gripping harder.
Please Don’t Be Too Strict About This
If you are not ill and have no active disease, eating small amounts of the harmful foods is perfectly fine, and can even do you good. These lists earn their weight during illness, in recovery, or when a specific problem — skin, respiratory, stomach or colon trouble, or a liver disturbance — needs correcting. For a healthy person, treating them as prohibitions turns eating into a source of anxiety, and that anxiety does more damage than the food ever would. Manage your diet as far as your circumstances comfortably allow, and no further.
In Summary
Dieting as a Colonotonia comes down to keeping leafy greens and seafood at the center, taking flour and meat only in moderation and alongside vegetables, and keeping alcohol at a distance. The broad picture matches Pulmotonia, but the water-type streak does not license meat — the rejection can be stronger, not weaker. Remember the sensitive colon and the perfectionist streak, and when the body is at ease, hold the list loosely.
