The shorthand runs: seafood for Pulmotonia and Colonotonia, meat and wheat for Hepatonia and Cholecystonia. The second half holds. The first half does not, and the exception is specific enough to be useful. This article is about fish for the Wood constitutions — which ones, and why.

The Rule and Its Exception
Fish and seafood are generally good for Pulmotonia and Colonotonia; meat and wheat are generally good for Hepatonia and Cholecystonia. That much is standard.
Two corrections. Not all fish are good only for the Gold types. And, without exception, all meat is classified as unsuitable for them. The asymmetry matters: the meat rule is firm, the fish rule is not.
Which Fish Suit the Wood Types
There is a shared description: fish that grow on the bottom, eat murky matter, and have tissue holding a great deal of energy. Catfish, loach, eel, flounder.
The reasoning follows from the arrangement. Hepatonia and Cholecystonia have strong liver and gallbladder function and a recessive lung and large intestine. Because their hepatic metabolism and detoxification capacity is excellent, foods whose energy is condensed suit them — they have the processing capacity to use them rather than be burdened by them.
These fish have firm tissue and dense nutrition, and they help send the liver’s qi, and the energy and substance the liver has stored, onward to the lung — which is precisely the movement the Wood constitutions need, from their strongest organ toward their weakest.
Two practical notes. Loach and eel digest well and burden the stomach little, which makes them suitable in this group even when digestion is not at its best. Flounder is a white fish that does not generate damp, which is the usual objection to seafood for these types.
There is a neat confirmation of the system here. Elsewhere on this site, seafood is described as good for Pulmotonia with eel and flounder as the exceptions. Those are exactly the two fish that belong to the Wood column. The exception in one place and the inclusion in the other are the same fact seen from two sides.
Why Blue-Backed Fish Go the Other Way
Mackerel, saury, Spanish mackerel and the rest of the blue-backed group work in the opposite direction.
The blue colour is associated with gathering qi that has collected at the exterior — the lung — and drawing it in to the liver. For Pulmotonia and Colonotonia, with developed lung and large intestine and a recessive liver, that movement supplements exactly what is short.
This is why the general rule points seafood at the Gold constitutions. Eating it compensates for the weak point of the arrangement.
And it gives a clean substitution. A Gold type who wants what meat provides should eat blue-backed fish. Meat weakens liver function and can provoke allergic and inflammatory conditions in these types, because energy condensed in that particular form burdens the recessive liver. Blue-backed fish delivers the density without the burden.
When Healthy, Think About Balance
I would not push the meat prohibition to its strictest form for someone in good health.
A healthy Pulmotonia or Colonotonia eating a modest amount of meat alongside vegetables is not much of a problem, and may be better than not. A life without any stress is neither possible nor ideal, and the same is true of a diet with no variation in it at all.
There is a case that raises the question sharply. Within ECM, elite marathon runners are said to be predominantly Colonotonia — and the competition diets used at that level are nothing like a constitutional food chart. The standard carbohydrate-loading protocol runs roughly: three days of protein-centred eating with carbohydrate almost entirely restricted, then three days of carbohydrate loading — glutinous rice, porridge, bread, noodles, pasta — with protein and fat minimised; on race morning something easily digested, and during the race honey water and bananas for rapid energy. The object is to maximise stored glycogen so that energy does not run out over the distance.
Those athletes are not eating for their constitution. They are eating for a specific physiological demand, and it works. Which is worth sitting with before concluding that eating only what suits your type is the answer to everything.
I am describing a group tendency reported within ECM, not assigning a constitution to any named individual — that is not something the system supports.
Two Questions From Readers
Flounder is a sea fish — is it really acceptable for Hepatonia? And what about white fish such as pollock, which some practitioners include and others do not?
Prof. Baek’s answer: flounder and pollock in moderation are fine. If it still feels uncertain, eat them as a red spicy stew with plenty of radish, bean sprouts and potato — which is the cooking-method principle applied to remove the doubt rather than the fish.
Is fish oil bad for the Wood types, given it is made from sardine, anchovy and mackerel? The answer is deliberately not categorical: where omega-3 is genuinely needed it can be effective, so it is hard to declare it beneficial or harmful outright. Trying a small amount is reasonable, and algae-derived and grain-derived omega-3 products exist for anyone who would rather avoid the blue-backed source. That is a supplement question to settle with your own clinician rather than from a chart.
Summary
Where a fish lives and what it is made of matters more than the fact that it came out of water. Bottom-dwelling, dense fish move energy from the Wood types’ strong liver toward their weak lung; blue-backed fish move energy from the Gold types’ strong lung toward their weak liver. Same category of food, opposite directions.
