Are Soeumin Really Cold? The Renotonia and Vesicotonia Who Run Hot

The short answer: Soeumin are known for feeling the cold, but many of them run hot. In the older Sasang system, Soeumin covers the two Water constitutions of Eight Constitution Medicine (ECM), Renotonia and Vesicotonia. Books describe them as people with a weak stomach, low stamina and cold hands. That picture is not wrong — but it is incomplete, and practitioners who see these patients every day know the “hot Soeumin” very well. I am a Vesicotonia myself, so this is not an abstract question for me.

In Summary

  • Soeumin (Renotonia and Vesicotonia) have too little rising qi reaching the spleen–stomach and a strong pull of descending qi into the kidney.
  • In Vesicotonia, a cold, sluggish stomach makes the body easily cold — but a hot Soeumin is common, and hot or cold has too many exceptions to define a constitution.
  • Two reasons: descending qi that over-concentrates in the kidney generates heat, and modern life — less physical work, more comparison — piles up heat-producing emotions.
  • Hot and cold sensitivity reflect your current condition and can change. Constitution does not. Never classify yourself by whether you feel the heat or the cold.

What Defines a Soeumin

Soeumin are constitutions in which the rising, Fire-like qi that should reach the spleen and stomach runs short, while the descending, Water-like qi gathers strongly in the kidney. In ECM terms, Renotonia’s hierarchy runs kidney > lung > liver > heart > pancreas, and Vesicotonia’s runs kidney > liver > heart > lung > pancreas. In both, the kidney leads and the pancreas–spleen axis sits last. In ECM, “strong” does not mean “safe” — the dominant axis carries the most qi and tips most easily into excess.

In Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM), the traditional healing system of Korea also known as Hanbang (한방), the root of the body’s energy — its Fire — is food. A weak digestion means less Qi (氣) and Blood (혈) to work with. In Vesicotonia in particular, the stomach tends to be cold and sluggish, so the body becomes cold easily. That is where the familiar picture comes from — but it is a tendency of specific organs, not a rule that Soeumin are cold.

Why Some Soeumin Run Hot

1. Descending qi that piles up in the kidney

Descending qi, like any qi, becomes concentrated when it collects in one place — and concentrated energy produces heat. When the downward pull into the kidney becomes excessive, the result is not cold but heat.

This is not a modern idea. Dongui Suse Bowon (동의수세보원, 東醫壽世保元), the founding Sasang text by the scholar-physician Lee Je-ma (1837–1900), divides Soeumin disease into two groups: a heat pattern, in which the kidney receives heat and the exterior is hot (腎受熱表熱病), and a cold pattern, in which the stomach receives cold and the interior is cold (胃受寒裏寒病). The founder of Sasang medicine already recognised hot Soeumin as a category of its own.

In ECM terms, I see heat-leaning presentations more often in Renotonia than in Vesicotonia. That is a clinical tendency, not a rule.

2. How we live now

Two changes in modern life push in the same direction: far less physical activity, and far more information — especially about how well everyone else seems to be doing. Together they let anger, envy, anxiety and jealousy accumulate in the body, and those emotions generate heat. A constitution prone to anxiety and short on digestive energy is especially vulnerable. So these days, hot Soeumin are common.

The Other Constitutions Are No Different

None of this is special to Soeumin. Taeeumin, Soyangin and Taeyangin each include people who lean cold and people who lean hot. Constitution sets the baseline; today’s state gets a vote.

Does Heat or Cold Sensitivity Ever Change?

Constitution is inherited and does not change. But feeling the heat or the cold is simply your present condition showing on the surface, and it can shift considerably with how you look after yourself and the environment you live in.

So the mistake to guard against is this: assuming that because you feel the cold you must be Taeeumin or Soeumin, or that because you feel the heat you must be Taeyangin or Soyangin. Temperature preference is not a diagnostic test. And any persistent change — new heat intolerance, night sweats, unexplained cold intolerance — deserves a conventional medical check before it is put down to constitution.

I write a great deal about constitution because many readers are curious about it. But knowing your constitution accurately is what matters; a wrong guess can be worse than not knowing at all. Treat it as a process of getting to know yourself, and if you want to find out, do it over time with a practitioner you trust.

Summary

Vesicotonia, with its cold and sluggish stomach, can easily become cold — but that is an organ-level tendency, not a verdict on all Soeumin. But descending qi that over-concentrates in the kidney generates heat, and modern sedentary, comparison-heavy life adds more. Lee Je-ma recognised hot Soeumin more than a century ago. Hot or cold describes your condition today, not your constitution.
