Burning Hands and Feet in Colonotonia: Uncommon, and What Fatigue Has to Do With It

Colonotonia is not a constitution in which burning hands and feet is common. The organs bound up with this symptom are not where this type’s clinical centre lies. It can still appear, though, and when it does the usual setting is fatigue. Tiredness depletes the liver blood (肝血) that would otherwise hold heat down — and with the liver and gallbladder most recessive here, this constitution never had a large reserve of it to begin with.

In Summary

  • Colonotonia’s organ hierarchy runs: lung and large intestine > kidney and bladder > pancreas and stomach > heart and small intestine > liver and gallbladder.
  • The organs linked to heat and sweating in the hands and feet are the heart, the pancreas-stomach axis and the kidney — none of which is where this constitution’s trouble sits. So the symptom is uncommon here.
  • Colonotonia is the most complex of the eight, and typical cases are rare.
  • This type’s heat surfaces, in principle, at the exterior — the respiratory tract and the skin. Hence the frequency of inflammatory conditions in both.
  • When the body tires, the liver blood that would cool the heat runs short. With the liver and gallbladder most recessive, that margin was never large.
  • Depleted stamina also lets qi escape outward, producing a configuration resembling Renotonia — and the symptom can then arise for the same reason it does in that type.
  • Two things need managing: anger, and the heat generated while metabolising food.
  • Digesting food that does not suit the constitution generates heat in the lung, liver, stomach and large intestine. Meat deserves particular care while the heat is present.
  • Holding anger in also accumulates heat and worsens the symptom. Better to be angry once about a matter than repeatedly.
  • If burning hands and feet or excessive sweating appear alongside falling stamina, reduce working hours and rest properly.
  • The consolation is that Colonotonia releases heat easily, so recovery is generally quick.

Why It Is Uncommon Here

In Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM), the traditional healing system of Korea also known as Hanbang (한방), the organs closely linked to heat and sweating in the hands and feet are the heart, the pancreas-stomach axis and the kidney.

Colonotonia’s hierarchy runs: lung and large intestine > kidney and bladder > pancreas and stomach > heart and small intestine > liver and gallbladder. This constitution’s clinical centre is the overactivity of a strong large intestine, and the three organs above are not it.

So burning hands and feet is not a common complaint in this type.

Colonotonia Is the Most Complex of the Eight

One thing worth adding. Colonotonia is the most complex of the eight constitutions, and genuinely typical cases are rare.

That is why I am more cautious writing about this type than the others. What the hierarchy predicts diverges from what presents more often here than elsewhere.

So this article is better read as “if this symptom appears in Colonotonia, what should you look at” than as “Colonotonia is like this.”

This Type’s Heat Goes Outward

Colonotonia’s heat surfaces, in principle, at the exterior — the respiratory tract and the skin. That is why inflammatory conditions in both are frequent in this type.

Burning hands and feet is not this constitution’s usual stage. Heat has to pool inside to reach the palms and soles, and this is a type that sends it out.

Fatigue Empties the Liver Blood

And yet it does appear sometimes — when the body has become tired.

In KTM the liver stores blood. That blood presses heat down and cools it. When fatigue accumulates, liver blood runs short and there is nothing left to do the cooling. The liver and gallbladder are the most recessive axis in Colonotonia, so this margin was never generous. It can be the first thing to give way under tiredness.

A second factor overlaps with it. As stamina is depleted, qi escapes outward easily, and at that point Colonotonia takes on a configuration resembling Renotonia. Renotonia is a type in which qi collects in the kidney and the hands and feet turn hot. When Colonotonia is spent, the movement of qi comes to resemble that shape, and the symptom can then arise for the same reason it does in Renotonia.

Put together: burning hands and feet in Colonotonia is less a disease native to this constitution than a pattern borrowed briefly from another type, under conditions that fatigue created.

First: Food

Digesting food that does not suit the constitution generates heat in the lung, liver, stomach and large intestine. While the heat is bad, meat deserves particular care.

  • All meat — beef, chicken, pork, dog, duck, goat, lamb, venison, egg yolk, ham, sausage
  • Dairy — milk, yoghurt, cheese, butter
  • Wheat flour products — ramyeon, jajangmyeon, udon, bread, biscuits
  • All oils — sesame, perilla, walnut, brown rice, olive, cooking oil, fried and stir-fried food

Second: Anger and Sleep

Colonotonia releases heat readily. Anger or grief can discharge it, which is part of why heat tends to gather at the skin and respiratory tract in this type.

Here is the part people miss. Holding anger in also accumulates heat and worsens the symptom.

That is not an argument for being angry more often. To keep the original phrasing: when you are angry, better not to be angry repeatedly — better to be angry once about a given matter. It is boiling over the same thing several times that stores the heat.

Third: Falling Stamina

If burning hands and feet or excessive sweating appear alongside declining stamina, reduce working hours and rest properly.

This connects back to the liver blood. Rest is not a passive measure in this constitution — it is the only way to refill what has emptied.

The Consolation

Colonotonia has the property of releasing heat easily. So as long as you are not consuming large amounts of unsuitable food or staying in an uncomfortable situation for a long stretch, recovery is generally quick.

The symptom is uncommon, its cause is comparatively clear when it does appear, and removing the cause resolves it faster than in most types.
