Burning Hands and Feet in Renotonia: When Qi Collects in the Kidney and Will Not Come Back Up

In the water constitutions, burning hands and feet arises because qi descending toward the kidney and bladder runs in excess. If that is the mechanism, the symptom should appear more often in the type where that axis is most dominant — and in principle it does, in Renotonia. Here one very common response works in exactly the wrong direction: reaching for something cold to drink.

In Summary

  • Renotonia’s organ hierarchy runs: kidney and bladder > lung and large intestine > liver and gallbladder > heart and small intestine > pancreas and stomach.
  • Renotonia and Vesicotonia are both Soeumin types with a weak stomach, but illness starts in different places.
  • Vesicotonia falls ill because the stomach is weak, so controlling the quantity of food is what matters.
  • Renotonia falls ill because kidney and bladder qi is excessive, so digestion is comparatively robust and many eat well.
  • Because this symptom comes from excessive downward movement toward the kidney and bladder, in principle it is seen more often in Renotonia.
  • In Vesicotonia it arises when the stomach goes slack and qi, being insufficient, sinks. In Renotonia qi is not insufficient — it collects in the kidney.
  • The first line of management is disposition and good sleep. Even after balancing qi with herbs or acupuncture, the symptom holds if the fire from the mind is strong.
  • Renotonia carries some gold-constitution properties, so heat shows outwardly more than in Vesicotonia. Reducing meat and wheat flour helps.
  • Food that chills the stomach strengthens the descending quality of qi and worsens the symptom. Salty food also drives qi downward, so eat less salt than usual.
  • Rinsing the feet or body in cool or lukewarm water helps. Take care not to sweat heavily.

Where Renotonia and Vesicotonia Differ

Both are Soeumin constitutions with a weak stomach, but the place illness begins is not the same.

Vesicotonia falls ill because the stomach is weak. Controlling the quantity of food is therefore the central matter.

Renotonia falls ill because kidney and bladder qi runs excessive. Digestion is sturdier than in Vesicotonia, and many people of this type eat well.

That difference produces different routes to the same symptom.

This Is a Disease of Descending Qi

In the water types, burning hands and feet is a condition arising from excessive downward movement of qi toward the kidney and bladder.

So in principle it is observed more often in Renotonia, where that axis is most dominant. This is an inference drawn from the hierarchy, but the direction is clear enough.

The routes differ too. In Vesicotonia, the stomach goes slack, the volume of qi falls, and qi sinks downward for want of support. In Renotonia, qi is not lacking — it collects in the kidney.

Heat appears in the same place, but one version sank for want of lifting and the other gathered from excess. Management differs slightly as a result.

First: Disposition and Sleep

The heat that arises in a Renotonia body divides roughly in two.

One is heat from qi collecting in the kidney — that is, from qi descending.

The other is heat from the anxious mind characteristic of Soeumin types. When anxiety runs long, a person starts drawing lines and dividing people into sides, and that state generates its own fire.

So even when herbs or acupuncture rebalance the qi, the symptom holds if the fire coming from the mind is strong.

A lighter frame of mind and good sleep are easy to prescribe and hard to do. In this constitution, though, even a small increase tends to produce a good result.

Second: Food

Renotonia carries some of the gold constitutions’ properties, so heat shows outwardly more than it does in Vesicotonia. When burning hands and feet are present, reducing meat and wheat flour — foods unsuitable for Colonotonia — helps here too.

And here is the most important point for this type. Eating food that chills the stomach strengthens the descending quality of qi, and the symptom gets worse.

This is the exact opposite of the Soyangin picture. Cold cools heat and drives qi downward at the same time. For Soyangin, whose kidney is most recessive, that direction helps. For Renotonia, whose problem is qi already collected downward, that direction harms. The same glass of water, read through a different hierarchy, gives the opposite answer.

To avoid: all cold food (ice, ice cream, cold drinks, cold noodles, barley tea); raw food (raw fish, uncooked vegetables); pork and egg white; clams, shrimp, oysters, sea cucumber, crab, octopus, squid, snakehead, carp; Korean melon, strawberry, banana, pineapple, melon, persimmon; perilla seed and oil, pufferfish, beer, cucumber, water dropwort, goji tea. Heavy sweating exercise is also unsuitable.

Salty food carries a descending quality, so eat less salt than usual. Same principle.

What suits: glutinous rice, rice, brown rice, potato, corn; laver, sea mustard, kelp; spring onion, onion, ginger, mustard, pepper, curry; apple, tangerine, orange, black grapes, mango, tomato, pear, peach. Food that warms the interior without being heavy in calories is the right shape.

Third: How to Wash

Cooling the feet, or rinsing the whole body in cool or lukewarm water, helps this constitution.

Take care not to sweat heavily, though. The water types are sympathetic-tense, and sweating costs them. Cooling the surface and driving out sweat are different acts.

What Heat in the Feet Is Telling You

If a Renotonia patient has heat in the feet, it also means they have been living hard with a worried mind.

Qi collecting only downward means there was no margin left to send it up. I hope you recover and go further.
