New to ECM? Start with What Is Eight Constitution Medicine? for the basics of the eight body types.
Headache in the Cholecystonia constitution (목음체질) can be thought of along two lines: headache arising from a cold, sensitive lower abdomen, and headache arising when qi cannot disperse and stagnates — the headache that travels with low mood.
In Summary
- Cholecystonia’s organ hierarchy runs: liver (gallbladder) > heart (small intestine) > spleen (stomach) > kidney (bladder) > lung (large intestine). The large intestine sits in the weakest position.
- When the lower abdomen is uncomfortable or the large intestine becomes sluggish, the legs feel heavy, the lower back aches, and bowel movements turn irregular.
- The mind low easily; the body and lower belly run cold; sleep becomes difficult. The structure is a cold lower belly with heat crowding the heart.
- Low mood comes readily because the Wood-type disposition to store qi and substance makes qi stagnate easily, while weak lung and large intestine function means qi does not disperse well.
- Headache follows when the lower abdomen turns cold and sensitive, or when qi stagnates with low mood.
- Management means raising a sweat to release the stagnant qi, the low mood and the sensitivity of the lower belly — and correcting the physical imbalance through diet.
Two Routes to Headache
Cholecystonia’s organ hierarchy runs: liver (gallbladder) > heart (small intestine) > spleen (stomach) > kidney (bladder) > lung (large intestine). The liver is strongest and the large intestine weakest.
First, headache from the lower abdomen. When the lower abdomen is uncomfortable or the large intestine loses its strength, the legs feel heavy, the lower back aches, and bowel movements become irregular. The body and the lower belly turn cold, and sleep grows difficult. This is the classic picture of heat above and cold below described earlier in this series: the lower belly is cold while heat crowds the heart. As the lower body cools, the upper body heats, and the head begins to ache.
Second, headache from stagnant qi. The mind of this constitution turns low easily, for two overlapping reasons. One is that the Wood-type disposition to store qi and substance lets qi stagnate readily. The other is that weak lung and large intestine function means qi does not disperse well. The gathering force is strong while the releasing force is weak — so things accumulate inside.
When Headache Arrives
The two conditions to watch for are these: when the lower abdomen turns cold and sensitive, and when qi stagnates along with low mood. Under either, headache develops readily in this constitution.
Managing Headache as a Cholecystonia
Raise a sweat. For Cholecystonia, sweating is what releases the stagnation of qi, the low mood, and the sensitivity of the lower belly. One measure addresses all three problems at once.
Correct the balance through diet. Where the physical imbalance is corrected by diet, the headache can resolve with it. What matters most for this type is reducing whatever chills the lower abdomen — cold food, and cold salads built on leafy greens.
Reference Notes
Leafy vegetables — water parsley, spinach, sylimarin greens, kale, celery, pumpkin leaf, mugwort, crown daisy, bracken and chives — do not suit this constitution. Fish is better cooked than raw. For exercise, most forms suit apart from swimming.
In Summary
Headache in Cholecystonia comes from cooling below and from accumulation within. So the answer runs along the same two lines: warm the lower belly, and let the gathered qi out through sweat.
