Hepatonia and Cholecystonia Skin: What the Wood Types Cannot Push Out

For the wood constitutions, the skin is less a question of what came in than of what could not get out. Heat held in the liver, a large intestine that runs cold and slack, and qi and blood that never quite reach the surface — three things pointing the same direction. In Eight Constitution Medicine (ECM), “strong” does not mean “safe”: in Hepatonia skin, the most dominant organ is the liver, and the liver is exactly where the heat collects.

In Summary

  • Hepatonia’s organ hierarchy runs: liver and gallbladder > kidney and bladder > heart and small intestine > pancreas and stomach > lung and large intestine.
  • The lung and large intestine are most recessive here, so the force that pushes qi and substance outward to the skin is comparatively short.
  • The liver detoxifies so well that the cost of bad food and drink does not show up right away. It accumulates, then surfaces as liver heat.
  • Meat suits Hepatonia, but excess drinking, eating and meat all worsen the skin. Cutting meat out entirely, on the other hand, can make things worse.
  • In Cholecystonia the gallbladder is dominant, the pancreas-digestive axis strong, the kidney weak and the small intestine most recessive. A cold large intestine is the defining trait.
  • A cold lower abdomen paired with heat gathering in the face is the pattern to watch. Warming the lower abdomen is how you reach the face.
  • Both wood types are parasympathetic-tense, so sweat-producing exercise and warm bathing benefit them. Swimming and cold rubs do not.
  • Cholecystonia avoids cold and raw food and eats warm. Leafy greens and shellfish do not suit; root vegetables, meat and mushrooms do.

The Face Belongs to Yangming — Which Is Why the Large Intestine Shows There

In Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM), the traditional healing system of Korea also known as Hanbang (한방), the face is governed chiefly by the Yangming (陽明) channels, which belong to the stomach and the large intestine.

In the wood constitutions it is the large intestine side that carries the weight. In Hepatonia the large intestine is most recessive; in Cholecystonia it runs cold. The mechanisms differ but the outcome rhymes — what is not processed below comes up.

Hepatonia: The Problem of an Organ That Does Its Job Too Well

The Hepatonia liver is excellent at storing blood, detoxifying and handling metabolism. Food and medicine that do not suit the constitution get absorbed, processed and cleared. In the short term, nothing happens.

The trouble is what comes after. Years of drinking and mismatched eating accumulate; heat builds in the liver; and the liver’s heat appears on the skin.

In the years I spent in clinical practice, I saw this pattern often enough to recognise it by the way patients described themselves. “I can eat anything and I’m fine” was said as evidence of health, and it was functioning instead as a licence for accumulation. The single most practical piece of advice for skin in this constitution is this: do not trust your own liver’s capacity to clean up after you. It will, right up until it does not.

Hepatonia: Qi and Blood That Never Reach the Skin

That the lung and large intestine are most recessive means something specific. The tendency to store qi in the liver is strong, while the force that carries substance outward to the skin surface is comparatively weak. It can show as coarser texture or as visibly wide pores.

The response is dispersal. Sweat-producing exercise, warm bathing. Hepatonia is parasympathetic-tense, so sweating benefits it, and swimming or cold-water bathing runs the opposite way. Because the lung is the recessive organ here, talking less also helps — a small thing that patients tend to dismiss and then notice.

Hepatonia: Do Not Cut Meat Out

Animal protein suits Hepatonia. Beef is particularly good, along with dairy, root vegetables, mushrooms and seaweed. Leafy greens, blue-backed fish, all shellfish, cucumber, buckwheat, barley and chocolate do not suit.

When the skin is troubled, the amount of meat should come down to a reasonable level. Reducing and eliminating are not the same move. Hepatonia patients who switch to vegetarian eating sometimes find their skin gets worse, not better — which runs in the same direction as the better-known finding that enforced vegetarianism in this type is associated with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The liver in this constitution is built to work with animal protein, not around it.

One more thing worth saying plainly: changing the diet does not clear the skin quickly. It takes considerable time, and during the adjustment the skin can react more sensitively to food, not less. People abandon correct changes at week three because week three looks worse than week one.

Cholecystonia: A Cold Lower Abdomen and a Hot Face

In Cholecystonia the gallbladder is dominant, the pancreas-centred digestive axis is strong, the kidney is weak and the small intestine is the most recessive. In terms of quality, the defining trait is a cold large intestine, and chronic large-intestine dysfunction is this constitution’s signature condition.

When the lower abdomen is uncomfortable or the large intestine loses its force, the legs feel heavy, the lower back aches and bowel movements turn irregular. And paired with that cold below, heat gathers above. The face is where it lands.

So skin care in Cholecystonia starts at the lower abdomen, not the face. When the large intestine warms and recovers its strength, the face is nourished properly, the temperature gap between above and below narrows, and the skin settles.

What Cholecystonia Eats

Cholecystonia is not a Soyangin type. It is a cold-natured constitution and needs warm food. Leafy greens, blue-backed fish, all shellfish, cold drinks and ice cream, green and black grapes, kiwi, Korean melon and banana do not suit.

Root vegetables, meat (beef, chicken, duck and others), mushrooms, laver and sea mustard, chestnuts, pine nuts and walnuts, cooked seafood, and dairy taken warm all suit. There is no reason for this type to avoid meat.

Something That Applies Beyond Cholecystonia

One observation to add here, and I offer it as an interpretive framing rather than a constitutional rule.

Modern life is heavy on mental and emotional labour regardless of constitution, and that work tends to leave people in exactly this configuration: a cold lower abdomen and heat accumulating in the face. Drinking, overwork and short sleep deepen it.

The Cholecystonia approach — warm the lower abdomen, sweat moderately — applies to that state as well. You do not need to know your constitution for it to be reasonable advice. You do need to know it before you decide what to eat.

Summary

The wood types accumulate. Hepatonia accumulates because its liver is capable enough to hide the cost until the cost is large. Cholecystonia accumulates because a cold large intestine cannot move things along, and what stalls below rises above.

In both, the corrective is outward movement: sweat, warmth, and food that the constitution can actually clear. The face is the last place to work on and the first place you notice.
