Why You Can Gain Weight Even on a Constitutional Diet: The Elephant Lesson

New to ECM? Start with What Is Eight Constitution Medicine? for the basics of the eight body types.

Some people eat only the foods that suit their constitution and still cannot lose weight. That is not strange at all. In Korean Traditional Medicine (KTM), the traditional healing system of Korea also known as Hanbang (한방), and within Eight Constitution Medicine (ECM), eating for your constitution and losing weight are not as directly linked as people assume.

Picture an elephant. The elephant is a pure herbivore, living on leaves, grass and fruit — in the language of the eight constitutions, a plant-eating “Gold-type” animal. And yet a grown elephant needs some 300 kg of food and 70–90 litres of water a day, and a four-tonne Asian elephant puts away 80 kg without difficulty. Even on nothing but the food that suits it, an animal that eats a great deal grows vast.

In Summary

  • Keeping to your constitutional diet and losing weight are separate things. Just as an elephant grows huge on plants alone, food that suits your type will still put on weight if you eat a lot of it.
  • To lose weight, in the end, you have to eat less. The same is true for Pulmotonia and Colonotonia dieting: eating less matters more than keeping strictly to the food list.
  • That does not make constitutional eating useless. Foods that suit you replenish what your body lacks, so eating less feels less punishing and appetite regulates better — and even if you overeat, metabolism runs faster.
  • Eating unsuitable food in quantity, by contrast, unbalances the organs further and can actually drive appetite up.
  • So treat the constitutional diet not as weight-loss magic, but as a tool that makes eating less easier.

Animals Don’t Have Constitutions

An elephant herd does not always eat the same thing at the same time, and elephants have been caught rummaging through rubbish for plastic. Individuals differ, but within a species animals eat much the same food, because they share the same organ characteristics and are not divided into constitutions the way people are. Only humans — higher beings through the accumulation of evolution and upright walking — carry a division into constitutional types. So calling the elephant a “Gold type” is a figure of speech that only means something once you are already thinking in terms of human constitutions.

Then Why Eat for Your Constitution at All?

Here is where it is easy to take the wrong lesson. The point is that constitutional eating is not directly tied to weight loss — not that it is pointless.

Foods that suit your constitution replenish the energy your body is short of. So satisfaction and fullness come more readily from the same amount, and eating less feels less of a struggle; even when you overeat, the metabolism turns over smoothly and less is laid down. Eat a lot of what does not suit you, on the other hand, and the organ balance tips further out of true, and that imbalance is itself what pushes appetite up. In other words, the constitutional diet is the support beam that makes the real key — eating less — far easier to manage.

If You Are Pulmotonia or Colonotonia

The Gold-type constitutions, suited to plants and seafood, follow the same principle. Being suited to vegetables does not mean a mountain of vegetables will take the weight off. For these types too, the thing that matters most in dieting is eating less, not keeping the food chart perfectly. Use the chart as a support laid on top of that. (The specific food lists are covered in the Pulmotonia and Colonotonia dieting articles.)

In Summary

The reason you can keep to a constitutional diet and still gain weight is simple: food that suits you will still add weight if you eat a lot of it. The elephant is the proof. The real key to dieting is eating less, and the constitutional diet is the tool that makes that less punishing. Exercise works the same way — it matters less for burning calories than for metabolising well what you have eaten. Don’t reverse the order: eating less comes first, and the constitutional diet comes second.
