Burning Hands and Feet in Vesicotonia: When a Slack Stomach Lets Qi Sink

Vesicotonia is a constitution whose pancreas and stomach — the organs that generate heat and energy — are the most recessive, so its hands and feet are more often cold. Yet a fair number of people in this type run hot instead, driven by the anxious, hurried mind characteristic of it, and some have both symptoms alternating over time. How one weak stomach produces two opposite results is what this article is about, and why burning hands and feet here needs a different response than you would expect.

In Summary

  • Vesicotonia’s organ hierarchy runs: kidney and bladder > liver and gallbladder > heart and small intestine > lung and large intestine > pancreas and stomach.
  • The pancreas and stomach, which generate heat and energy, are most recessive — so cold hands and feet are the more common picture.
  • Even so, many in this type develop heat in the hands and feet from its characteristic anxiety and impatience.
  • Some people have burning and coldness alternating over time.
  • When the stomach goes slack and empty, the hands and feet turn cold.
  • But as the stomach slackens, descending qi collects in the feet and lower body — and with an anxious, hurried mind added, the hands and feet turn hot.
  • Compared with Renotonia, the routes are not different; which route predominates is.
  • Cold drinks and cold-natured food make the symptom worse. Cooling the hands and feet from the outside is fine.
  • Food that warms the interior suits, and when the heat is bad, reduce the amount you eat.
  • Exercise matters more than people expect — the kind that raises little sweat, or where sweat cools quickly. Swimming, cycling, easy walking.

This Type Usually Runs Cold

Vesicotonia’s hierarchy runs: kidney and bladder > liver and gallbladder > heart and small intestine > lung and large intestine > pancreas and stomach. The most recessive axis is the pancreas and stomach — and that is precisely where the body generates heat and energy.

So cold hands and feet are the more common complaint in this type. The symptom this article addresses is not the default setting of the constitution.

And Yet Many Run Hot

A fair number of people in this constitution develop heat in the hands and feet, driven by the anxiety and impatience characteristic of the type.

What is more interesting is that the two symptoms sometimes appear in the same person at different times. In one period the hands and feet are chilled; in another they burn.

It looks like a contradiction. It comes from one root.

One Cause, Two Outcomes

When the stomach goes slack and empty, the hands and feet turn cold. There is no fuel to make heat, so nothing reaches the extremities.

But as the stomach slackens, descending qi collects in the feet and the lower body at the same time. Add the anxious, hurried mind of this type and the hands and feet turn hot.

So from a single condition — a weak stomach — a shortage of fuel produces coldness and a downward pooling of qi produces heat. That is why the two can alternate in one person.

Compared with Renotonia, the other Soeumin type, the routes are not different — which route predominates is. Both patterns, qi sinking for want of support and qi collecting in the kidney, can occur in either constitution. In Vesicotonia the first is the more usual picture; in Renotonia, the second.

Why Cold Makes It Worse

When the hands and feet burn, reaching for a cold drink or cold-natured food makes the symptom worse.

Cold does two things at once: it cools heat, and it drives qi downward. In Vesicotonia the trouble began with qi already sinking, so cold pushes further in the direction that caused the problem.

Cooling the hands and feet from the outside is fine. What you drink and what you wash with are separate questions.

To avoid: all cold food (ice, ice cream, cold drinks, cold noodles, barley tea); raw food (raw fish, uncooked vegetables); pork and egg white; barley and red bean; clams, shrimp, oysters, sea cucumber, crab, octopus, squid, snakehead, carp; Korean melon, strawberry, banana, pineapple, melon, persimmon; perilla seed and oil, pufferfish, beer, cucumber, goji tea. Heavy sweating exercise is also unsuitable.

What suits: chicken, lamb, goat, venison, beef; glutinous rice, rice, brown rice, potato, corn, radish, carrot, lotus root, deodeok, bean sprouts, bellflower root, spinach, squash, garlic; laver, sea mustard, kelp; spring onion, onion, ginger, mustard, pepper, curry; apple, tangerine, orange, black grapes, pear, tomato, mango; scorched-rice tea, sesame oil, cinnamon, jujube.

When the Heat Is Bad, Eat Less

Warm the interior with food, but when the heat is bad, bring the volume down as well — roughly 60–80% of the usual.

This is not about losing weight. It is about reducing the load that generates the heat. And while the heat is present, it is better not to eat much meat.

Exercise Matters More Than Expected

Movement does more than people assume for releasing an anxious mind and stagnant qi.

The kind matters, though. What suits is exercise that raises little sweat, or where the sweat cools quickly — swimming, cycling, easy walking. The water types are sympathetic-tense, and sweating costs them.

And the Mind

Setting things down helps. That one is difficult for me too.
